Today whilst browsing the net, I was unfortunate enough to come across this blog. Oddly reminiscent of Savetoby.com.
I realize that there are those who will disagree with me, but I find this downright disgusting. This woman took a controversial personal choice and dangled it over the blogosphere in a pathetic attempt for personal monetary gain.
She bragged about having indulged in alcohol and drugs throughout her pregnancy, making it clear that she thought her fetus was probably becoming “drug-addicted, deformed, retarded… Abort the mutant or raise it in the community? You decide!” Just about every post she made was an attempt to appeal to emotionally-driven anti-choicers so they would feel pity for the fetus.
This wasn’t for reproductive rights. It was for money.
I’m pro-choice. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with having an abortion, just like I don’t think there’s anything wrong with eating a humanely-raised rabbit like Toby. I do think there is something wrong with fucking with emotionally unstable people to part them from their money. I can only hope this woman didn’t become too much of a pro-choice figurehead in the minds of those who read her blog - when they consider reproductive rights, they won’t see a woman weighing her options and choosing what’s best for her personal situation, they’ll see someone looking for the best way to turn their private affairs into big money by playing on the fears and misinformed beliefs of others.
And for the record, I could care less whether or not this particular website was a hoax. The impact could be just as devastating regardless.

You might not know it, but the most powerful “pro-lifers” in America are quite mentally stable. They’re just assholes who want to control women’s bodies for political and economic reasons.
But whatever, Joy. I got the 37 grand and I’m putting it to good use. Bite me.

Do I think the most powerful anti-choicers are mentally unstable? No - and I agree, they’re out to dictate women’s private decisions. But then, it wasn’t the “most powerful pro-lifers” who ended up posting insane, emotionally-charged comments all over your blog… those were just the voters who determine who ends up in power.
Hope you enjoy your money. You sold out a nice chunk of the pro-choice movement for it.

Joy, you must be the most inappropriately named, humor-impaired dimwit i’ve ever encountered. Please explain how my using satire that angers “pro-lifers” can possibly mean I’ve “sold out” the pro-choice movement?
What, you think you’re going to appeal to their sense of reason and justice? You think you’re going to change a single “pro-life” mind?

Yes, and all sorts of other names you can muster up too, I imagine.
I just don’t think it was funny. I think it may very well have left a bad taste in the mouths of those who are sympathetic to pro-choice causes but have difficulty letting go of the part of their indoctrination that tells them that a fetus has value.
The entire point of your blog was to make the point that your childbirth could be bought. The fact that you presented abortion as the penalty for refusing that ultimatum plays right into the “pro-life” idea that killing a fetus is some kind of wrong against society. Why else would they pay a dime, and why else would you expect them to?
And yes, some anti-choicers do have a sense of reason and justice - they just haven’t put it where it belongs yet. For goodness’ sake, how many “I was pro-life, but personal growth has changed my perspective,” stories are out there? Logic changes minds, not satire that demonizes pregnant women.

Oh, yes…taking stupid conservative and “pro-life” stereotypes about single pregnant women and women seeking abortions to their logical conclusions is “demonizing” them.
I submit to your superior ethics, and eagerly await the coming of your satire-free regime. Who’ll be first against the wall come your revolution, Joy?
Colbert?

Oh, you don’t think conservatives demonize women? I disagree. And (this could just be me) but I don’t think making a blog built entirely on those stereotypes does anything to disprove their validity.
My blog, my opinions. Don’t like it? Don’t read it. Regime thwarted! Aren’t you just so happy?
Oh, and that logic thing I was talking about comes in handy in other situations, too. Whether or not I like satire has nothing to do with this - I’m just not fond of your satire.
