While Sarah Palin was the mayor, Wasilla rape victims were indeed charged for their own rape kits, which could cost as much as $1200 apiece. Palin’s political history regarding sexual assault is just plain disturbing.

Guess what….all hospitals charge for rape kits, even the ones here in Kansas. I guess that means we should blame our own Governor Sebelius. Fact is, all medical supplies and procedures in emergency rooms are billed to somebody…mostly insurance companies or medicare. You can get shot in a mugging and guess what….the hospital will charge for saving your life.
Most states, Kansas and Alaska included, have victim rights departments in conjunction with their judiciary and medical costs for victims of violent crimes (including rape kits) are provided by state and federal funds through them.

Would you force a mugging victim to pay the police for the man hours spent on finding the culprit? Would you charge a victim of theft for the investigation? Should the families of homicide victims have to pay for fingerprint analysis and DNA testing to catch a violent criminal?
Victims should NEVER have to pay for materials used in INVESTIGATING a crime. First off, they are the ones who have been wronged, not the culprits. Second, our whole society is invested in finding and catching criminals before they can cause any more destruction than they already have.
The only person who wins in a situation where a rape victim is forced to either remain silent or pay hundreds of dollars is the assailant. And yes, I would argue that any government representative who lets such a policy stand should be held responsible for it.

I thought the video was funny, but I agree with Jay. I think this Palin-rape kit angle has been debunked.
Of course, insisting that rape victims carrying a potential pregnancy to term isn’t much better.

I don’t believe we live in an age when politicians can afford to let things like this go unnoticed. They SHOULD be held accountable for policies that are downright wrong that they allow to stand.
Essentially, if you picked a victim who was poor and uninsured, you were virtually guaranteed to get away with rape. Without a rape kit, there’s no solid evidence that a rape ever even occurred.
I simply do not think that is okay. Given that Wasilla was the only Alaskan town that was allowing this to happen, I think it is more than fair to hold Palin at least partially responsible for it. Especially since she selected a police chief who argued in favor of it.
